This study explores the essence of gratitude as a psychospiritual coping mechanism among
dual-role, lower-middle-income mothers in the labor-intensive industrial sector. The primary
research gap addressed is the prevailing dominance of Western positive psychology, which
tends to be secular and individualistic, thereby overlooking the transcendental dimensions of
the coping process. Furthermore, there remains a rarity of research specifically positioning
gratitude as a coping system for dual-role mothers within the religious contexts of the Global
South. Utilizing a Husserlian descriptive phenomenological design, data were gathered
through in-depth interviews with three working mothers in Sukoharjo Regency. The findings
demonstrate that gratitude functions as a dynamic, integrated coping system manifested
through three key dimensions: (1) syukr qalbi as an emotional buffer through the acceptance
of destiny (qana’ah); (2) syukr amali, which sacralizes labor and domestic burdens as acts of
worship; and (3) syukr lisani as a verbal emotion regulation technique. Theoretically, this
research enriches Islamic psychology by integrating Al-Ghazali’s concept of gratitude into
contemporary coping theory through transcendental meaning-making mechanisms. Practically
and academically, these findings provide a foundation for developing mental health
interventions based on indigenous wisdom and offer a novel cross-cultural psychological
perspective on how spiritual values mitigate the impact of role conflict amidst economic
challenges.
