ABSTRACT

Dea Ayuk Agustin, 211141159. The Relationship Between Self-Monitoring and Impulsive Buying Among University Students Who Use the Shopee Application. Undergraduate Thesis, Islamic Psychology, Department of Psychology and Psychotherapy, Faculty of Ushuluddin and Da’wah, State Islamic University of Raden Mas Said Surakarta, 2025.

Impulsive buying is a purchasing behavior conducted spontaneously, without prior planning or careful consideration. Among university students who use the Shopee application, impulsive buying is often triggered by various factors such as attractive promotions, advertisements, or even social pressure. Students often feel influenced by such offers, even when they do not actually need the items they purchase. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between self-monitoring and impulsive buying among students who use the Shopee application.

This study employed a quantitative research method. The sample consisted of 104 students from UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta, selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using a Self-Monitoring scale (11 items, α = 0.840) and an Impulsive Buying scale (10 items, α = 0.793). Content validity was assessed using Aiken’s V with a coefficient of 0.92. The hypothesis was tested using Pearson’s product-moment correlation analysis, assisted by SPSS version 26.

The results of the study showed that the correlation coefficient between self- monitoring and impulsive buying was 0.049 with a p-value of 0.098. Since the significance value is greater than 0.05, the null hypothesis (Ho) is accepted. This indicates that there is no significant relationship between self-monitoring and impulsive buying. However, the correlation is positive, suggesting that a higher level of self-monitoring tends to be associated with a higher tendency for impulsive buying, although the relationship is weak. Based on these findings, this study is expected to provide deeper insight into the psychological factors influencing impulsive buying behavior among university students.
