This study discusses the motivation of pilgrims who visit the Tomb of Sunan Kalijaga Demak, as a form of religious tourism that has strong spiritual, cultural and social values.values. The tradition of pilgrimage to the tomb of a saint continues to develop as a religious and cultural phenomenon in society. Religious and cultural phenomenon in society. The research method used in this study is qualitative with a phenomenological approach.phenomenological approach. The data collection techniques used were in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation of pilgrims and caretakers. Documentation of pilgrims, and caretakers. In this research, there are 5 characteristics as informant selection technique.
Results analysis of the motivation of pilgrims at Sunan Kalijaga's Tomb shows that the main reason for pilgrimage is spiritual. In Vroom's theory, the value aspect (Valence) is considered to be more capable of explaining the motivation or reasons for a person to make a pilgrimage than the aspects of expectancy and instrumentality. Pilgrimage is understood as a form of self-approach to God and respect for religious figures.
