Skripsi, Prodi Komunikasi dan Penyiaran Islam, UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta, 2025. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh popularitas lagu “August” karya Taylor Swift. Lagu ini selalu meroket di tangga lagu streaming setiap akhir Juli hingga Agustus. Lagu “August” mengisahkan tentang cerita cinta segitiga yang rumit antara tiga remaja, dan cerita dalam lagu ini disampaikan melalui sudut pandang “wanita lain” dalam sebuah hubungan dua remaja lainnya. Lagu ini menarik perhatian karena melalui lagu ini Taylor Swift berusaha mengubah konotasi negatif dalam sosok “wanita lain” menjadi lebih positif dan tulus. Namun, tidak semua pendengar setuju dengan pesan yang ingin disampaikan Taylor Swift tersebut. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan bagaimana resepsi pendengar di dalam komunitas Swifties Joglosemar terhadap lagu “August.” Menggunakan teori resepsi Stuart Hall encoding-decoding, digambarkan faktor-faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi pemaknaan mereka terhadap lagu tersebut. Metode penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa wawancara mendalam dengan informan sejumlah enam orang berdasarkan dengan kriteria tertentu. Selain itu, observasi lapangan juga dilakukan dengan menghadiri acara yang diadakan oleh komunitas Swifties Joglosemar untuk memperoleh data yang relevan. Teknik keabsahan data menggunakan triangulasi data dengan membandingkan data primer berupa wawancara dan observasi dengan data sekunder berupa review lagu, jurnal, dan lain-lain. Sajian data yang ditemukan dari lapangan, dianalisis menggunakan teori resepsi Stuart Hall. Berdasarkan pada hasil penelitian, ditemukan empat informan masuk ke dalam kelompok hegemoni dominan dan dua lainnya termasuk ke dalam kelompok negosiasi. Kelompok hegemoni dominan, menyetujui makna yang ingin disampaikan Taylor Swift bahwa sosok “wanita lain” dalam lagu “August” tidak selamanya berkontasi negatif, melainkan pada dasarnya semua wanita hanya ingin dicintai dengan tulus. Hal ini dilatarbelakangi oleh pemahaman mereka yang mendalam terhadap Taylor Swift, latar belakang kisah percintaan yang serupa, serta fitur yang ada pada Spotify sebagai media penyampai pesan. Sementara kelompok negoisasi, mereka tetap menukai lagu “August,” tetapi memiliki pemaknaan tersendiri terhadap lagu tersebut. Hal ini dilatarbelakangi oleh pemahaman yang kurang mendalam terhadap gaya menulis lirik Taylor Swift atau latar belakang kisah percintaan yang berbeda dengan narator dalam lagu “Augut.” Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa resepsi anggota Komunitas Swifties Joglosemar terhadap lagu “August” dipengaruhi oleh latar belakang pengalaman pribadi, keterlibatan dalam komunitas, serta pemaknaan mereka dalam memahami lirik lagu berdasarkan konteks sosial dana budaya. This research is motivated by the popularity of Taylor Swift's song “August.” This song consistently rises on streaming charts every late July through August. “August” tells a complicated triangle love story between three teenagers, narrated from the perspective of “the other woman” in the relationship of two other teens. The song draws attention because, through it, Taylor Swift attempts to change the negative connotation of “the other woman” into a more positive and genuine figure. However, not all listeners agree with the message Swift aims to convey. Therefore, this research seeks to describe how listeners within the Swifties Joglosemar community perceive the song “August.” Using Stuart Hall's reception theory of encoding-decoding, this study explores the factors influencing their interpretation of the song. This study employs a qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews involving six informants selected based on specific criteria. In addition, field observation was conducted by attending events organized by the Swifties Joglosemar community to obtain relevant data. Data validity was ensured through data triangulation by comparing primary data (interviews and observations) with secondary data (song reviews, journals, and others). The data gathered from the field were analyzed using Stuart Hall’s reception theory. Based on the findings, four informants were categorized under the dominant hegemonic group, while the other two were placed in the negotiated group. The dominant hegemonic group agreed with the meaning Taylor Swift intended to convey, that the figure of the “other woman” in the song “August” does not always carry a negative connotation, but rather, all women fundamentally desire to be loved sincerely. This interpretation was influenced by their deep understanding of Taylor Swift, similar romantic experiences, and the features provided by Spotify as the medium of message delivery. Meanwhile, those in the negotiated group still appreciated the song “August,” but developed their own interpretations of its meaning. This was due to a limited understanding of Taylor Swift’s lyrical writing style or differing romantic experiences compared to the narrator in the song “August.” Therefore, it can be concluded that the reception of the Swifties Joglosemar community members toward the song “August” is influenced by personal background, involvement in the community, and their interpretation of the song’s lyrics within social and cultural contexts.
